Ellerine’s Community Development Centre
Karen teaches a quilting class once a week at Ellerine’s Community Development Centre (ECDC). The purpose of the class is to teach students how to make items that they can sell to provide an income. In addition to making quilts, they have learned how to make various bags, purses, oven mitts, toaster covers, clothes pin bags, rugs and other items.

Jeanette, one of the students who attended the first class, is employed by the development Centre and works at ECDC full time teaching others to quilt.
According to an article about ECDC in a recent magazine, “So far, 1,077 students have passed through the centre, receiving training in skills ranging from literacy, sewing, quilting and catering to IT. And with more than 40 percent now gainfully employed or having started successful businesses of their own, it is clear the centre has achieved its initial aims.”
