Khayelihle Children's Village
Community Orphan Care Programme
In addition to residential care on the KCV farm, Khayelihle Children's Village has a programme as an outreach to the community to help orphaned children. The Community Orphan Care Programme cares for about one hundred children.
These orphans do not live on the KCV farm. Instead they live in Bulawayo in a township near the KCV office. They live in their home or the home of a caregiver. These orphans
may be cared for by a grandparent, aunt or uncle, friend or the oldest
sibling of the child. The oldest sibling may be very young to have the
responsibility of the other children.
Jabulani Ndiweni is the field director for the Community Orphan Care Programme.
The COCP provides food, clothes, school uniforms, school fees, some medical
assistance, and spiritual guidance. Every Friday Jabulani meets with the children in the programme at a Sunday School building near where they live. They sing, pray and have a lesson. He also meets once a month with the caregivers and goes to their homes to see the kids.
In Zimbabwe, each child must pay school fees, pay for their own books and
pay for their uniforms that they wear to school. If they can't pay, they
don't go to school.
When we have enough donated clothes for the children in residence at KCV,
the extra clothes go to the community orphan care children.
An American missionary couple in Zimbabwe finds sponsors for the COCP
children and help fund the programme. We are grateful for their involvement and
commitment.
